The European Union has added its voice to the cautiously positive international reaction to Sunday’s announcement of the lifting of the State of Emergency, and pledge to release detainees, by Sudan’s Sovereignty Council.
Two protesters complained about being abused in detention after they were held during a vigil for the young activists who are on trial after being accused of killing a police officer. Security forces also used heavy tear gas on protesters during yesterday’s pro-democracy protests despite the lifting of the State of Emergency on Sunday.
Trade Union leaders expect an increase in strikes in various parts of the country due to the deteriorating living conditions, poor wages, and salary adjustments. At least eight different strikes are happening in the country at the moment.
The deficit in the trade balance for the first quarter of this year rose to $1.22 billion, an increase of nearly two times over the same period last year when the deficit was $477 million, further threatening Sudan’s economy.
