Lawyers question legal grounds of ERC arrests

Lawyers questioned the validity of the legal measures taken against members of the now-suspended Empowerment Removal Committee* (ERC), who were detained on Wednesday. An adviser to Lt Gen Abdelfattah El Burhan, Commander-in-Chief of the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF), refused to call the arrests ‘political’.

Sudan releases detained BBC journalists

Three BBC Arabic journalists, who were briefly detained in Sudan on Monday while covering pro-democracy demonstrations in the capital, Khartoum, have been released. “A BBC team were briefly detained by Sudanese authorities while working in Khartoum. We are glad that the authorities were able to resolve this situation quickly,” the BBC said in a statement.

US Senator warns Sudan coup leader of ‘targeted sanctions’

In a telephone call on Monday, US Senator Chris Coons cautioned Sudan’s coup leader and head of the Sovereignty Council, Gen Abdelfattah El Burhan, that there is “strong bipartisan support” in the US Congress for “legislation that would impose targeted sanctions on those undermining the democratic transition in Sudan”.
